About Me

I love seersucker and bourbon and porches and barbecue; everything about the old and new South.

I’m a lawyer by trade, and a foodie by obsession. I’m a food judge at heart and am a legit certified BBQ judge (I judge the Memphis in May World Championship and the American Royal and tons of other contests for the Kansas City Barbecue Society), I’m a Prime Steak Judge (traveling all over the South for the Steak Cookoff Association), and I regularly judge the Duck Gumbo World Championship and the World Cheese Dip Championship. It’s a ton of fun.

I write about the food I eat and love to cook. Real food. Sometimes elegant, often not. To paraphrase Aaron Franklin, some days I have way more passion than skill. I’m married to a vegetarian, so many of my recipes are vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly. I take all my own photos, and have a real passion for catching artists at work.

Twenty plus years ago I made the decision to go to law school instead of cooking school. About 15 years ago I moved my law practice from Washington, D.C. to Little Rock, Arkansas, and have never looked back. Arkansas is a wonderful state, truly the Natural State, and is full of fun, interesting people, neat places to see and things to do, and it comes with a very low-key lifestyle. Just perfect.

The pig’s name is Wendel.

The Thing About Fried Pickles

The thing about fried pickles is that you know they’re going to be hot. And you know that little cup of ranch dressing isn’t going to do it. You’re going to burn your mouth, your hands, and have hot vinegary dill pickle juice streaming down your chin and dripping onto the table. That’s just the way it is. And you don’t care. So you dive in, and burn yourself good. And it’s fantastic.
