Sweet Things Abound at Austin’s Sour Duck Market

September 13, 2019 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

I have a few guys that I get together with a couple times a year to do a food journey. We pick a city and three handfuls of restaurants and try to hit all of them in three days. This fall we picked Austin, and started things off gently with a nice visit to Sour Duck Market.

Sour Duck Market is a terrific spot, that combines a beautiful indoor-outdoor setting with fantastic pastry and great coffee drinks. To me, this was the quintessential Austin place. A place I’d return to every couple days if I lived there.

We hit it up for the breakfast foods, but they also have a whole menu of items available for dinner. If we weren’t already hitting up its sister restaurants Barley Swine and Odd Duck, I would have pushed to try it out for dinner.

The pastries are beautiful. I think we got them all, and some cookies. For breakfast. Yeah.

The one just below the apple and powdered sugar one is a fig and goat cheese one. If they have that, order two. Trust me on that.

That apple one was great too. Sort of an uber apple fritter. That one has a place in my heart too.

They do savory pastries as well. This is a mushroom and goat cheese one. I liked the texture and contrast from the sweet pastries.

But you can’t live by pastry alone, so make sure you try out their specialty drinks. This one is the Mexican Chili Latte. It definitely brought the heat in at least two ways!

The Thing About Fried Pickles

The thing about fried pickles is that you know they’re going to be hot. And you know that little cup of ranch dressing isn’t going to do it. You’re going to burn your mouth, your hands, and have hot vinegary dill pickle juice streaming down your chin and dripping onto the table. That’s just the way it is. And you don’t care. So you dive in, and burn yourself good. And it’s fantastic.
