The Arkansas Soy Supper at Three Fold Noodles + Dumpling Co. Was a Real Hit

November 3, 2017 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

Most of you already know that my wife is a vegetarian, and that I occasionally dabble with making vegetarian food for her, like that time I made hickory smoked tofu on my smoker, or that time I made my own version of Chipotle’s tofu sofritas tacos. Well last night’s Arkansas Soy Supper was a real…

Lassis Inn is a Classic Catfish Joint

November 1, 2017 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

This review originally appeared as a guest post on Kevin Shalin’s wonderful blog The Mighty Rib as part of our monthly series called He Said, He Said. Here it is again, but with additional photographs and my expanded thoughts. I like to think of these as my director’s cut. I hope you enjoy it. There are a lot…

The Arkansas Times Heritage Hog Roast

October 1, 2017 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

I spent my afternoon today as one of the judges at the Arkansas Times Heritage Hog Roast. That’s a local Arkansas barbecue competition that uses heritage hogs. This year they provided the professional smokers with Boston Heritage Hogs developed and raised by Katie Short of Farm Girl Meats. (The amateur teams each received a pork…

The Steak Rules

September 21, 2017 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

While I’m sure such strong desires go back at least as far as our caveman (and cavewoman) days, steak has certainly had a special place in my own food memories going back to my childhood. Truth be told, we didn’t have much growing up (other than lots of kids and two hardworking parents), but every…

The Waffle House Still Rules, Mostly

August 30, 2017 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

This review originally appeared as a guest post on Kevin Shalin’s wonderful blog The Mighty Rib as part of our occasional series called He Said, He Said. Here it is again, but with additional photographs and further light editing.  I grew up watching Alice and Happy Days on TV, and so I love the idea of a good…

K Hall and Sons is a Family Owned Winner

July 6, 2017 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

This review originally appeared as a guest post on Kevin Shalin’s wonderful blog The Mighty Rib. We had planned that we’d both review K Hall as part of our occasional series called He Said, He Said, but my cup runneth over and I far exceeded my word limits so Kevin posted it as a solo…

Restaurant Buenos Aires is Mostly a Miss

June 1, 2017 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

This review originally appeared as a guest post on Kevin Shalin’s wonderful blog The Mighty Rib as part of our occasional series called He Said, He Said. Here it is again, but with additional photographs and further light editing.  I came to Buenos Aires knowing three things about Argentinian food, each of which made me very excited to…

Easy Homemade Kimchi

April 17, 2016 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

I admit it. I have a kimchi addiction. I love its savory spiciness, and how the kimchi’s taste actually changes as it ages. That’s because it’s alive! (It’s nature’s probiotic. Kimchi is full of naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria—that’s good bacteria that ferments the kimchi and gives it its eventual sourness!) Anyway, I usually buy…

Split Pea Soup with Bacon, Ham and Caramelized Onions

February 21, 2016 By WooPigFoodie 2 Comments

Split Pea Soup with Bacon

I’m a soup man. Always have been. There is nothing more close to my definition of a perfect food, than soup. Sick? Soup. Tired? Soup. Celebrating? Start with soup. See what I mean? My mom was really a soup master (mistress? momstress?). Split pea soup is one of those that I remember from early childhood….

Southern Collard Greens with Bacon and Onions

February 21, 2016 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

You really can’t have a Southern-focused food blog without a great collard greens recipe. This is it. I could eat these everyday, all day long. And they are easy-peasy to make! Here’s how I do this. Fill up your sink with cold water and drop in two bunches of collard greens, separating them out from…

Chickpea Tikka Masala

January 18, 2016 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

Chickpea Tikka Masala

Continuing on my winter vegetarian theme (can you tell I’m still within the New Year’s Resolution timeframe?), I bring to you a super easy Indian dish, chickpea tikka masala. This is savory and spicy, rich and creamy, and very filling. I like to serve this with toasted naan (Indian flatbread) right out of the oven….

Chipotle Tofu Sofritas

January 18, 2016 By WooPigFoodie Leave a Comment

Vegetarian Tofu Sofritas Tacos

As many of you know, Mrs. WooPigFoodie is a vegetarian. Now that doesn’t matter a whole lot to my omnivorous diet since she isn’t bothered by me eating what I like, but over the years I have begun eating a lot more plant-based, than animal-based (despite my many BBQ posts!). We recently went to Chipotle…

The Thing About Fried Pickles

The thing about fried pickles is that you know they’re going to be hot. And you know that little cup of ranch dressing isn’t going to do it. You’re going to burn your mouth, your hands, and have hot vinegary dill pickle juice streaming down your chin and dripping onto the table. That’s just the way it is. And you don’t care. So you dive in, and burn yourself good. And it’s fantastic.
